The Next Web Startup Rally: 5 Minutes to Impress

What we have been dreaming about for the last couple of weeks, months even, is now a reality. We at Cleeng are very pround and excited to announce that we are among the 18 finalists of TNW Start up Rally powered by Microsoft Bizpark! Accessible at: http://thenextweb.com/conference/startups/

Having successfully passed the various selection steps, and ousted more than 200 competitors, we have reached the final. Today is the moment of truth, consisting of a 5 minute pitch on stage to convince the jury (and it is a hell of a jury featuring Zee Kane, Mike Butcher, Wolfang Schuster, and Werner Vogels to name just a few…) that the idea behind Cleeng is a killer.

Undoubtedly The Next Web conference is the opportune moment to increase awareness around the solution we launched last February,  but more importantly, to also announce of the release of Cleeng’s Enterprise Solution.

So far we have focused on independent site publishers mostly using WordPress like bloggers, photographers, musicians, and small app developers. Now, with our Enterprise Solution, we go one step further to address large publishing houses and mainstream consumer apps.

Cleeng’s Enterprise Solution, unveiled at TNW, includes three modules:

1- Brightcove.

We have partnered with Brightcove, a leading online video platform, in order to offer a high-quality, straightforward in-video monetization solution. Leveraging the extreme ease of use and versatility of the Cleeng solution, Brightcove customers can now set monetization conditions for video content (price, period, etc.) directly from the Brightcove Studio.

Paypal for Digital Goods, powered by Cleeng now ready !

We are very pleased to announce our new WordPress plugin: Paypal for Digital Goods, powered by Cleeng.
As we always believed, making things easy is one of the most complex thing. And this applies very well to setting up a simple payment mechanism like PayPal digital goods on a given website. The problem is not creating the PayPal account (even though we were surprised by the time it took us). The challenge is more how to easily setup the elements you want to sell on your website, and make it straightforward for you and the 95 million PayPal account owners to best experience the content sold. To see how it works, just browse below.

What are the typical hidden costs when setting up a payment solution on your site?

  • Payment processing fees (in the case of Paypal, 5cts + 5% of the transaction, so 10% on a $1 transaction)
  • Implementing it on your site: basic installation is easy, but more advanced features – specify activation time, adjust easily pricing, security, user ratings… -are more complex
  • Deal with consumer claims & support
  • Maintain the systems up-to-date with the latest releases of WordPress and the most common plugins you use.

Freedom & ease of use, a story about Cleeng

A few weeks ago, Cleeng launched its public beta through a WordPress plugin, which is now being used by a growing number of publishers.
As we try to make it one of the leading solution for content monetization, I wanted to share with you the reasons why I joined Cleeng.
Prior to Cleeng, I worked for a European publishing powerhouse for many years; and one of our main challenge was the difficult balance between content quality and advertising.

Common monetization mistakes: Turning “Free” into “Fee”

Now that we’ve been spending the past months working  more closely with publishers, from small bloggers to large publishing powerhouses, the most frequent mistake we have heard is that a paywall should be implemented in order to turn a “free model” into a “paying” one.

Well, in reality, turning a “free model” into a paying one can be very difficult, and it won’t happen overnight. Why?

We forget that what triggers paying content is consumer acceptance. For instance, to gauge typical consumer reactions, see, Twitter comments about the NYT paywall in the last 2h:

We have covered the issues behind the NYT implementation and freemium models, and Stacey Kramer has further analyzed all root causes and options last week,

  1. Length of time it took to implement the solution, and many differences between what was first said, and what is finally executed
  2. Confusion over the way is supposed to work
  3. Complications regarding access through smart phones and different devices that have different pricing, creating very complex logistics

Overall, poor listening to consumers expectations, and trying to cope with corporate mantras like: (more…)
